Sustainability

A wood company with a conscience.

Conservation and preservation of the world’s forests and rainforests are integral to PALS’ business. We couldn’t be in business without these magnificent resources, and we are committed to preserving them for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations.

PALS is committed to increasing consumer access to sustainable wood and wood products that meet stringent requirements of the world’s most influential environmental policy maker, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Products with FSC certification are proven to be derived from sustainably harvested forests. In 1996, PALS created our EarthSource Forest Products division for the express purpose of offering FSC-certified tropical hardwoods and wood products.

PALS’ environmental commitment is deep and includes developing markets for lesser-known species that grow in forests alongside popular woods. In Central America and Southeast Asia, for example, PALS has created cottage industries for flooring and garden furniture made from Machiche. Our goal in developing markets for secondary species is to offer customers beautiful, useful woods that are harvested responsibly, support indigenous communities that live in the forests and help prevent higher-value woods such as Mahogany from becoming extinct.

Closer to home, PALS has worked closely with suppliers over the last 20 years to bring recycled lumber and low-VOC products to market. We use energy-efficient lighting in our buildings and recycle office paper. We team up with municipalities and other businesses to promote environmental awareness in local communities and urge policy-making that supports sustainability.
